WSFS Chapter One Hundred

“Is my wife talking about that ‘Word Spirit’?”

After Yang Hongjin finished speaking, everyone fell silent for a moment.

After a moment, Mother Cheng cleared her ears and said, “What did you just say? I didn’t seem to hear clearly. Who is pregnant?”

Cheng Yun smiled and pointed to himself, “Me.”

“Cheng Ge’er/Cheng Yun is pregnant?!”

Everyone exclaimed in unison. After coming back to their senses, Mother Cheng threw aside what she was holding, rushed forward, grabbed Cheng Yun’s hand, and tremblingly asked again.

Cheng Yun patiently confirmed again, “The doctor in the town confirmed it, and Doctor Liu also examined me when I came back. Look, Yang Hongjin even brought back some medicine from Doctor Liu.”

After hearing this, Mother Cheng burst into tears, wiping them away while murmuring “Buddha bless you.” She then turned and hurried to burn incense.

Father Cheng was also very excited, his eyes reddened. He patted Cheng Yun’s hand and kept saying, “Good child,” then patted Yang Hongjin’s shoulder and said, “You’re also a good child.”

Aunt Wang’s family was equally happy, saying that this was truly a double blessing. They even encouraged Wang Liang and Cheng Bao’er to work hard, making both children blush.

The whole family was overjoyed. The Cheng family hadn’t been this happy for a long time. It made them even happier than when Cheng Yun earned a lot of money before. Mother Cheng’s spirits seemed to have improved a lot in a short time, showing signs of making a comeback.

Cheng Yun had always been lightly marked since childhood, and his low fertility had become the laughingstock of the entire village. His parents felt guilty towards him and the whole family had been living under the scorn of others.

Now that Cheng Yun had earned a lot of money, got pregnant less than a year after marriage, and even Cheng Bao’er was about to get married, Cheng’s parents felt that there had never been such a smooth sailing time like this year. After thinkin about it, they could only merit Yang Hongjin as being a husband who bring’s good luck to his wife.

Both families enjoyed a hearty meal together. Before leaving, Mother Cheng repeatedly reminded and instructed them to pay attention to this and that in their daily lives. She even mentioned that she would go to the town the next day to buy some better fabric to make a few sets of clothes for the baby.

Cheng Yun laughed at her nervousness but felt a warm sense of affection for his mother’s concern. He felt fortunate to be loved by everyone around him.

Today’s Mother Cheng had become much stronger than before. Although she still occasionally showed signs of being a delicate woman, perhaps because their financial situation had improved, she now had much more confidence in her speech and moved around the village more freely.

She greeted everyone she met with a smile, a side of her rarely seen by others. So they teased her, saying that something good must have happened to her.

Cheng’s mother didn’t hide it at all. It was indeed a matter of pride for a child to marry well. Moreover, considering that her eldest child was considered unable to have children and was seen as a “loss-making deal,” the news of his pregnancy less than a year after marriage brought even more joy. Just this alone could make her proud throughout the village, strutting her stuff as if she owned the place.

So, within a week, the whole village knew that Cheng Ge’er was pregnant.

Some of their close friends came to congratulate them, and Cheng Yun and Yang Hongjin received so many gifts that they were overwhelmed. Even though they were just ordinary farm produce, the goodwill behind them was evident.

Those who only had average relations with Cheng Yun also took this opportunity to visit and congratulate them, hoping to strengthen their ties with him. Their gifts were even more generous.

Their home was filled with things brought by others. When Yang Honcai and his wife came to visit, there was hardly any space to walk. Du Yueqiong, upon entering, exclaimed in surprise, “I have never seen people in the village be so generous. Cheng Ge’er, you really have some skills to be able to squeeze some money out of the pockets of these cheapskates.”

Cheng Yun smiled but didn’t say anything, welcoming the couple inside. “What brought my sister-in-law here? Come in and sit down. Don’t stand at the door.”

Last time when Li Fengjiao and Wang Cui came to make trouble, Du Yueqiong had also helped to say a few words, so Cheng Yun had quite a favorable impression of her.

Du Yueqiong was all smiles, completely unreserved. Her attitude towards Cheng Yun was like treating her own close friend. Sitting down, she patted Cheng Yun’s hand and said, “We came today just for this. We heard recently that you are pregnant, Cheng Ge’er, which is a great thing. We just came to congratulate you.”

Cheng Yun guessed that this was probably the reason for their visit. It was because his mother was too happy. Even Su Jun, who lived next door and was not very familiar with the villagers, had mentioned it to him yesterday.

“Yes, I am pregnant,” Cheng Yun admitted generously. “But it’s still early. Doctor Liu said I shouldn’t get angry easily. You know, last time Hongjin’s mother and I had an unpleasant disagreement, so I didn’t go home inform you when I got back.”

“I understand, I understand,” Du Yueqiong nodded repeatedly. “Hongcai and I also thought of this. That’s why we came specially to see you. If you need anything from us, don’t hesitate to ask.”

Cheng Yun nodded with a smile. He noticed Yang Hongcai glanced at Du Yueqiong a few times, but Du Yueqiong ignored him. Instead, he asked, “Does Second Brother have anything to tell me?”

Yang Hongcai scratched his head awkwardly. Ignored by Du Yueqiong, he hesitated for a moment before saying, “Well, the thing is, after Mother went back last time, she has restrained herself a lot. She didn’t say a word about everyone’s fault all day anymore and locked herself in her room without coming out. Dad asked me to know about the situation, so I told him everything.”

Du Yueqiong was afraid he would say something wrong, so she quickly took over, “We didn’t lie to Dad either. We just told him how Mother was being aggressive, and about that crazy woman who can’t get married and wanted to come to our Yang family.”

Yang Hongcai pulled her clothes, but Du Yueqiong shook him off and continued, “Dad listened to what we said and stood on our side, saying that this time it was unfair of them. I didn’t lie about this. He also asked us to come and visit you more often and not to let your heart feel cold.”

Yang Hongcai also nodded in agreement this time.

Cheng Yun guessed that Du Yueqiong probably didn’t exaggerate Li Fengjiao’s words to Yang Dashui as much as she said, at most just mentioned it briefly. Du Yueqiong was trying to make friends with him, and he could see that.

Du Yueqiong was a clever person who knew what she should do in this family. In this regard, she can see more clearly than Yang Hongcai. Cheng Yun felt comfortable talking to her, so he didn’t mind following her lead.

He poured a cup of tea for Du Yueqiong and said with a smile, “Thank you, sister-in-law, for your hard work. You’ve been busy.”

Du Yueqiong was pleasantly surprised and happily took the cup of tea, drinking it in one gulp, while saying that it was what she should do.

As things seemed to drag on without getting to the point, Yang Hongcai, feeling a bit restless, took over and said, “Dad has also heard about Cheng Ge’er’s pregnancy. He has already talked to Mother. Cheng Ge’er, if you have time one day and your health improves a bit, why not go back home and have a look? We didn’t have a proper family meal together last winter. This time, with such a happy event, we should celebrate properly.”

After listening to Yang Hongcai’s words, Du Yueqiong sighed with relief but also held her breath. Their visit this time was indeed at Yang Dashui’s request. Li Fengjiao didn’t say much this time upon hearing about Cheng Ge’er’s pregnancy, just a moment of surprise and disdain, without the usual cursing. They didn’t know whether she was influenced by Cheng Yun’s beating last time or was considering Yang Dashui’s attitude, but it was because of this that Yang Hongcai and Du Yueqiong dared to come and find Cheng Yun at Yang Dashui’s request.

But on the other hand, they were afraid that Cheng Ge’er might hold a grudge against Li Fengjiao. If he got angry and something happened, they couldn’t afford the responsibility.

Fortunately, Cheng Yun just lightly replied, “I see,” and didn’t say anything else. Yang Hongcai took it as Cheng Yun’s agreement. Afraid that he might change his mind after thinking about it, he didn’t stay long, just sat there for a while and then left with Du Yueqiong, which made Cheng Yun smile.

After the two left, Yang Hongjin, who had been sitting next door without speaking, finally said, “If wife doesn’t want to go, he doesn’t have to.”

Cheng Yun had no strong feelings about this, shrugged, and said, “I’m not afraid of her. I just find her annoying. I gave her a lesson last time, so she probably won’t dare to cause trouble again.”

“Is that the ‘Word Spirit’ my wife is talking about?” Yang Hongjin asked smoothly.

Cheng Yun paused for a moment, then softly responded with a “Yeah” after a while.

He thought for a moment, suddenly remembered the situation back then, and looked up at him, “You knew I used the Word Spirit, and that’s why you didn’t hesitate to carry me into the room without saying a word, right?”

Yang Hongjin didn’t hide it either, straightforwardly admitting, “Yes.”

Cheng Yun’s ears reddened as he recalled that there were indeed many clues earlier indicating Yang Hongjin’s recovery, but he just hadn’t thought deeply about it, or perhaps at that time, he didn’t want Yang Hongjin to recover so quickly. The twists and turns in this, even he couldn’t tell clearly.

He tried to recall what silly things he had done after Yang Hongjin recovered, what foolish words he had said, the more he thought about it, the more embarrassed he felt.

Yang Hongjin glanced at him and knew what he was thinking. After they talked about it that day, they hadn’t discussed it further. Now, after a few days had passed and everything had cooled down, he cautiously broached the topic.

“Wife.” Yang Hongjin reached out and pulled Cheng Yun into his arms, kissed his forehead, and said, “I know you have many little secrets in your heart, but no matter what it is, no matter who you are, remember that you are always my wife. I only love you in my lifetime, and that’s enough.”

Cheng Yun was stunned for a moment, and his body gradually relaxed.

After pondering for a moment, he curved his lips and said, “So, do you want to explain to me why you pretended to be crazy and were reluctant to return home in Nanming City before? And you were jealous all day long, even Chen Ge’er (Su Jun) and Bao’er were not spared. Do you still remember that you kept telling me not to stare at others all day long? Can you tell me how a grown man can be so jealous day by day? Huh?”

Yang Hongjin fell silent for a moment, then calmly released the hand around Cheng Yun’s waist.

I can’t answer. Why don’t I just run away?”
